What is your process?

Step 1: Get in touch! Drop us a message and let us know what you need. Ask us anything; we’ve seen it all.

Step 2: Assessment. We’ll connect and arrange to review your document to assess the type of edit and expected turnaround time.

Step 3: Consult. We offer a free 30-minute consult to discuss your work and our methods. We’re happy to provide a sample edit of up to 300 words.

Step 4: Estimate. Our estimate factors in the word count and overall difficulty of editing.

What are your deliverables?

We copyedit and proofread a wide variety of documents including articles, book chapters, blog posts, web copy, presentation slides, grant proposals, theses and dissertations, white papers, resumes, cover letters, annual reports, and more.

What’s the difference between proofreading, copyediting, and premium services?

Proofreading involves fixing surface errors: misspellings, grammatical mistakes, basic syntax errors, etc.

Copyediting goes deeper than proofreading and involves rephrasing and reorganizing sentences and paragraphs. The goal is to maximize readability. We figure out what you’re trying to say and help you say it as eloquently as possible. However, we won’t help you say anything new.

The premium services are where we help you say something new. Working one-on-one with you, we help you gather your thoughts, formulate core concepts, and get those concepts down on paper.

What are your rates?

We use different rates for each of our three core services based on factors such as the estimated length and difficulty of the project.

Here are some benchmarks. Proofreading jobs generally range from $35–$45 per hour. Copyediting jobs are between $40–$60 per hour (again, depending on the job requirements). Premium services, including developmental editing and coaching, start at $60 per hour.

Do you offer secure payment methods?

Absolutely. We use Wave Payments for secure, flexible, and easy online payments. Wave offers bank-grade security for all online payments, including ACH bank payments and credit cards. We accept Visa, Visa Debit, Mastercard, Mastercard Debit, American Express, and Discover. We can even set up recurring billing with automatic payments.

Will my work be safe and secure during the editing process?

Absolutely. Your intellectual property and privacy is our paramount concern. Proofread Hero will not disseminate your ideas or work in any form, or give away your personal details. We will be happy to sign confidentiality agreements before undertaking your work.

What style guides do you use?

Our primary stylebook is the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. We’re also more than happy to edit your papers for MLA, APA, CMS, Turabian, Harvard, or whatever other style you request.

What is your turnaround time?

Our goal is to begin working on a manuscript on the day we receive it. The exact turnaround time depends on many factors such as word count, type of deliverable, extent of editing required, etc.

Please contact us to get an estimated turnaround time for your manuscript.

What do you mean by “academic” proofreading and editing?

“Academic” refers to scholarly articles and book chapters, book reviews, grant proposals, theses, and dissertations. We work with graduate students, postdocs, professors, and independent scholars. Our editors all hold PhDs in writing-intensive fields and have decades of combined experience in academic research and writing.

Do you write original content? Or just proofread and edit existing content?

We do indeed offer copywriting and ghost writing services. Please contact us for more information.

Do you offer tutoring or presentation coaching?

Yes! We love teaching people of all ages and education levels how to write and communicate better.

We provide expert coaching sessions using Zoom conferencing formulated around a “mock talk” format. This entails you giving us a presentation run-through on Zoom, including any visual elements (PowerPoint, Prezi, or whatever presentation software you use). We watch your presentation to provide you with exacting, constructive comments that get you into top condition for the real deal.

I have a job that doesn’t fit into any single category. Can you help?

We’d love to! For “custom” jobs, our process will look similar to standard editing. First, fill out our form and let us know how we can help. We’ll schedule a consultation where you can tell us about your needs.

After that, we’ll come up with a custom plan for you and a quote, and, if appropriate, send a sample edit. Let’s make it work!

Are there any proofreading or copyediting jobs you won’t take on?

Before taking a job, we thoroughly assess the viability of the project. We will NOT work with any document that is ‘dead on arrival’ and has no prospect of accomplishing what the author is trying to do. For example, we will not edit a grant proposal if it is clear that the client does not meet the eligibility criteria of the grant.

We will NOT work with any document that communicates hate, and/or engages in or is connected to defamation, libel, slander. Anything related to conspiracy theories and/or misinformation campaigns is also off limits.

Do you work with high school or college students?

We offer proofreading services for high school and college essays with the explicit permission of the student’s instructor or tutor. We will correct surface errors and provide tutoring/coaching sessions on writing style, grammar and syntax, formatting, etc.

We will NOT do your homework for you. We will not make major revisions or rewrite sections of your essay. Our goal in working with high school and college students is to teach you to write better, NOT to write for you.
